So my friend Mike Mok of Hat Trix Music let me check out his studio and he showed my how to use an MPC. (Thank you so much man!) It was a pretty surreal experience. I’ve never had any business being inside an actual studio before with legit equipment. I felt like such a noob! When I was using the MPC, I couldn’t really get any beats down that well because I wasn’t used to how hard you’re supposed to hammer your finger onto this padded, square button. Haha. Needless to say, I wasn’t gonna get the hang of it on my first try. There was so much going on with that machine… so many features! Eventually we had the idea of me beatboxing into a mic so that we can make the beat off that. I thought, “Awesome! Now I won’t feel like such a noob!” Wrong again! When I was beatboxing to a metronome, for some reason I kept losing the beat. It was such a trip! Eventually I had to use all the time-keeping techniques: bobbing your head and/or tapping your finger. I guess I was barely moving thinking that the microphone would catch my slightest movements. I just had to loosen up. I was able to get the timing a lot better… but still couldn’t get it perfect.

Anyway, so we got to recording and Mike did his magic. Man, it was so cool! Hearing this music that didn’t exist a moment ago fill the room was a new and amazing experience. It really inspires me a lot to actually make music like I’ve wanted to for a long time… Although using Mike’s studio would be great, I know he reserves the space for actual clients who pay him money. Besides, I’m too broke to invest in something as leisurely as an actual studio with expensive equipment! Maybe I’ll do that when I take it to the next level =P. I am truly grateful for the chance to have used the studio. I think this could be a start of something great…
